To understand Vi, you got to understand Valoran. Though there are people that advocate peace in Valoran, almost every single culture has been shaped in some form by war. Vi grew up in a world where fighting is normal, and viewed as a way for anyone to get their goals. Sure, she was born in Piltover, one of the less war-like cities, but she was still shaped by the political state of her entire world, and as a result, was influenced by it.

Vi also has some unconscious issues with her past. This obviously brings up the question..so who the fuck was Vi? Where was she born and who were her parents? Why did she end up on the street? Canon doesn't tell me, but there's so much fanon and headcanon out there that it's like a buffet.

We know four things: 1) Vi isn't Vi's real name, as stated by her creator. 2) Vi has her name tattooed under her eye. 3) VI is also the numeral 6. 4) Vi's parents were non-existant. She was either an orphan, a runaway, or something else. See what I'm getting at??

Given all these factors, Vi is very likely some kind of "experiment" or clone, not necessarily created from scratch, but likely some kind of test subject, maybe even an illegal one. This is not far fetched given the technological level of Piltover. Since she escaped, or ran away, when she was very young, she likely has no conscious memory of being used in this way. Did someone help her escape?  Maybe, given the fact that she was little.

She likely does have unconscious sort of..remembrance of this, that usually manifests in weird dreams and a general malease about certain things. Vi would write these unconscious brain farts off as being her imagination. She probably believes herself to be an orphan.

Vi's been hardened by the streets. In the streets of any fictional setting, you show weakness, you get scoffed on. Gangsters, organized crime, and the like are common daily occurances. Since Vi was basically born on the streets because of her young age, she grew up all at once, and grew up as mean as a snake. Vi's rudeness, viciousness, and other negative traits make her feel "safe" and "secure." By refusing to show weakness, sympathy, or excessive kindness, she effectively protects herself against harm, but also prevents people from getting close. She is somewhat disillusioned, and views people as naturally manipulative and evil. However, her cold demeanor can break down, as shown when she forsakes her crew to help strangers survive.

Her way of showing affection towards people is by mocking and teasing them, because she doesn't know this can be offensive. Granted, some of her shit talk is genuine. She is unafraid to speak her mind and let people know when she hates them. So, she's grown up in a street culture where that is the way most people compliment each-other, by back handed teasing. This explains her almost bipolar interactions with Cait, in some occasions taunting her, and in other occasions being somewhat affectionate and encouraging. ("Boom, headshot!" "Yeah, teamwork!" "High-Five, Cupcake!" )

Vi has two in character interactions in game, a teasing jab at Jayce, and a whole ton of various interactions with Cait. Some people view this as Vi having a possible relationship with either of the characters. Here's my point of view!!

I think Vi likes Cait. I think she likes Cait, yeah. Through her teasing and silliness, I think deep down inside, she actually has feelings for the sherrif. This is pretty much fanon.

However, as of Vi being played by me, I do NOT think Cait reciprocates these feelings. I think Cait doesn't understand that Vi's mocking is just her screwing around, and takes offense. This might not be the case, but I personally think Vi is too "rough and tumble" to just admit to Cait that she has genuine feelings for her. The best way I can put it is that Vi is like the kid in the playground in gradeschool that pushes the girl she likes into the sandbox and bullies her relentlessly. See this video for a silly example. ( note: oh god this is so much like their situation.......... )

HOWEVER, hitting on her and hinting at saucy things may be something that happens in canon "off camera."

Maybe Vi doesn't admit her feelings because she's afraid of rejection, afraid of seeming soft, or afraid of..who knows what!

Noww, about Jayce. I think Vi views Jayce as a competition to get at Cait, mostly because they're from the same state, and Jayce is viewed as a hero. Her interaction with Jayce isn't positive, or sometimes-positive, like they are with Cait.

Character Name: Vi.

Series: League of Legends.

Timeline: As of 12/18/12 (League is real time.)

Canon Resource Link: here.

This two minute video is of EVERYTHING she says in canon.

Character Background:  Vi, like the majority of characters in League, has a very easy to understand background that isn't very important. It isn't specified if Vi is an orphan or not, but regardless, she still grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in Piltover, a fairly technologically advanced city-state.

Vi learned to steal, cheat, and punch her way to victory. She was a damn good pickpocket and damn good at mugging people. She specifically specialized in stealing high technology devices, stripping them, and making a profit. Over time she learned to modify Hextech mechanical devices. At age eleven she was involved in full scale heists and other criminal activities. Vi's rise in the crime industry was unceasing, until she got involved in a mining heist that went bad. Vi had a choice, save a bunch of innocent people in a collapsing tunnel, or scram with her crew and avoid getting involved. She showed her grey morality by deciding to assist the miners. When in the mines looking for an escape, she found a huge mining robot. Vi disassembled the robot and fashioned its arms into giant gauntlets. She smashed the rubble from the cave in and allowed the miners to escape. These gauntlets would soon become her trademark.

Vi disappeared after the mining incident and began to fly solo in the crime world. Her morality shifted, deciding only to steal from fellow criminals. Eventually the law caught wind of her, and the sheriff of Piltover, Caitlyn, offered Vi a deal. Vi would use her inside knowledge to help Caitlyn bust criminals. Vi would be allowed to beat up all the crooks she wanted, and wouldn't get in trouble for it. SCORE!

Vi took to affectionately calling Cait, "Cupcake." This is absolutely adorable. :3

Eventually Vi joined the League Of Legends, a large organization where "Champions" fight out brawls on a large arena over both petty and world changing conflicts. Why? Well, Vi likes to hit things, and you get to hit things a LOT in League. Cait, being involved in the League, may have had something to do with her joining.

So, Vi has a big personality!!

Vi doesn't play by the rules. She likes to hit things, likes to get in fights, and likes to assert herself over other people, especially authority figures. She's a punkass.

She's a very dominant person, and very tank girl-esque. She has a distaste for authority and a rebellious streak, along with being sarcastic and cocky. She also has an "abrasive" sense of humor and is very headstrong. She doesn't fear rushing into the fray, it's what she lives for. Vi is smart, she's a tinkerer and likes mechanics and mechanical devices, specifically devices aimed towards violence. She is a very forceful and violent person by all standards. It's also worth saying that she has the most taunts of any character in League.

She relies on herself, and has BIG IRON BARS around her mind. Vi doesn't break down to people often, and ignores pain. She refuses to show her vulnerability.

Abilities/Special Powers: Vi is a master mechanic, is self reliant, and is a pretty damn good fist fighter. Oh, and those giant things on her hands? They can punch through walls, metal, and pretty much anything else. Hardcore. It's worth mentioning that Vi is a "bruiser." Bruisers, in League, are characters that trade in a bit of sheer damage for resiliency. Vi hurts when she hits, not as much as a pure damage dealer, but also is durable. Her damage is sustained over a longer period of time than a pure damage dealer. Her way of fighting is simple, get right in the middle of the fray, and be super annoying.

So basically she's a mix between a tank and a physical damage dealer.

Her specific abilities are as follows:

Patch V1.0.0.153

Blast Shield
(Innate): When Vi's activated abilities damage an enemy, she gains a shield equal to 10% of her maximum health for 3 seconds. Blast shield has a 18 / 13 / 8 second cooldown.

  • Blast Shield will not proc with Denting Blows.
AbilityDescriptionLeveling up

Vault Breaker
(First Cast): Slows your movement speed by 15% while increasing damage and dash range over 1.25 seconds.

(Second Cast): Vi dashes forward, dealing physical damage and applying Denting Blows to all enemies hit. Vi stops upon colliding with an enemy champion, knocking it back. Vault Breaker deals 75% damage to minions and monsters.

Cost: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 mana

Cooldown: 18 / 15.5 / 13 / 10.5 / 8 seconds

Minimum Physical Damage: 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 (+0.7 per bonus attack damage)

Maximum Physical Damage: 100 / 160 / 220 / 280 / 340 (+1.4 per bonus attack damage)

Vault Breaker is a point-targeted line dash ability whose effect is divided into two active components. When first activated, Vi begins charging the ability, gradually increasing its range and damage for up to 1.5 seconds. While charging, Vi's movement speed is slowed by 15%. When the ability is activated a second time, Vi dashes towards the cursor, dealing physical damage to all enemy units along her path. Vi stops her dash upon colliding with an enemy champion and knocks it back.

Denting Blows
(Passive): Every 3rd attack on the same target deals additional physical damage equal to a percentage of the target's maximum health, reduces its armor by 20% and grants Vi bonus attack speed for 4 seconds. Denting Blows deals a maximum of 300 damage against minions and monsters.

Bonus Physical Damage: 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10% of target's max health (+0.029% per bonus attack damage)

Attack Speed Bonus: 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 %

Denting Blows is a passive ability that grants Vi an on-hit effect. Vi's autoattacks , Vault Breaker and Excessive Force apply a debuff on the target unit for a short duration. Subsequent autoattacks or ability uses stack the debuff up to 3 times, refreshing the duration. Upon applying a third stack to an enemy unit, the debuff is consumed and Vi deals bonus physical damage to the target, equal to a percentage of its maximum health and reduces its armor. Additionally, Vi gains bonus attack speed when the bonus damage is applied.

Excessive Force
(Active): Causes Vi's next basic attack to deal bonus physical damage to the target and enemies behind it. Vi periodically charges a new punch and can hold up to 2 charges at once.
  • Cost: 60 mana + 1 charge
  • Cooldown: 1 second
  • AoE range: 600
Total Physical Damage: 5 / 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 (+1.15 per attack damage) (+0.7 per ability power)

Charge Reload Time: 14 / 12.5 / 11 / 9.5 / 8 seconds

Excessive Force is an autoattack modifier that causes Vi's next autoattack to deal additional physical damage to her target and deal the same damage to all enemy units in a cone behind her target. Excessive Force works on an ammo system and can only be used when Vi has a charge. Vi will periodically store a charge and she can hold up to a maximum of 2 at a time.

Assault and Battery
(Active): Vi targets an enemy champion and chases it down, knocking it up for 1.25 seconds, dealing physical damage and applying Denting Blows.

While charging, Vi is immune to crowd control and will knock aside enemies in her way, dealing 75% damage to them.

Cost: 100 / 125 / 150 mana

Cooldown: 130 / 105 / 80 seconds

Physical Damage: 200 / 350 / 500 (+1.4 per bonus attack damage)

Assault and Battery is a single targeted dash ability that brings Vi to her target's location, dealing Physical Damage and knocking it up upon arrival. Additionally, all enemy units along Vi's path are knocked aside and take 75% of the ability's damage.

Third-Person Sample:

You know what's good about the closets? Well, free things to break! So mid-afternoon, while everyone is busy doing whatever they have planned for the day, Vi is busy waging war on innocent plates and bone china. She mentally calls this "training", almost everyone else would call it "making a huge, noisy, goddamn mess in a random unoccupied room." Hey, no one was using it anyway!

Every so often the sounds of shattering fine china echo from the fourth floor. Eventually the noises get louder and louder. Plates steadily become..not fun to break anymore. Therefore, she decides to graduate to bigger and better things, namely computer monitors. This is pretty awesome, there's a whole lot that's satisfying about putting your hand effortlessly through a computer screen. She vaguely wonders what Cait would think of her decision to occupy her time with "training." Yeah, she'd probably say something like..

Vi, what do you think you're doing?

..in her stupid little accent.

Then the sheriff would laugh at her with that stupid little chuckling laugh, covering her mouth. Vi would threaten to add Cait's fine tea set to the death count with a smile, but she wouldn't. Hell, maybe if she was lucky, she'd get "Cupcake" to loosen up and fling a cheap plate against the wall. Wow, that would sure be progress. That little tightwad loosening up..yeah, that would be something.

Vi notices a little white tea cup partially broken in the corner of the room.

The cup has delicate blue trim, and is only slightly smashed. With a crunch she yanks her hand out of the monitor, leans over, and picks up the delicate piece of bone china. Just for a moment, her expression turns thoughtful.

First-Person Sample:

So, now that I actually know what's going on here, it's time for a little introduction.

The name's Vi, Piltover's finest, and if you ask me, this place sure could use some shaking up. All you guys do is sit around and wait for events to wreck you.

[ She stretches, grinning softly. ]

So, since any one of these "events" could turn into a full blown Apocalypse, how about I teach a few of you kittens how to throw a proper punch? C'mon, I'll let you have the first shot free!
